বিরুলিয়া জমিদার বাড়ি

ঢাকার অন্তর্ভুক্ত সাভার উপজেলায় অবস্থিত ছোট একটি গ্রাম বিরুলিয়া। তুরাগ নদীর পাড়ে এই গ্রাম বাংলার জমিদারি প্রথা আর ব্রিটিশ শাসনের এক নিরম সাক্ষী হয়ে আছে।
গ্রামের একদম শেষ দিকে অবস্থিত জমিদার বাড়িটি রজনীকান্ত ঘোষের জমিদার বাড়ি নামে পরিচিত। কথিত আছে, অত্র অঞ্চলের জমিদার ছিলেন মূলত নলিনী মোহন সাহার। অঞ্চলটি ভাওয়াল রাজার জমিদারীর অংশ ছিল। জমিদারী যখন বিলুপ্ত হবার পথে তখন প্রায় শত বছর আগে নলিনী সাহার বাড়িটি কিনে নেন রজনীকান্ত ঘোষ। সেই থেকে তার নামেই বাড়িটি পরিচিত। এখনো তার উত্তরসূরীরা এখানে বসবাস করছেন। এখানে প্রায় ২৫ টি বাড়ি ছিও বর্তমানে তন্মধ্যে ১০-১১ টি বাড়ি অবশিষ্ট আছে।
অবশ্য শুধুমাত্র জমিদার বাড়িটিই নয়, আশেপাশে বিস্তর অঞ্চল জুড়ে ছিল প্রাচীন বসতি যার ছাপ এখনও কিছু ভগ্নপ্রায় ছোট ঘর গুলো বহন করছে। তুরাগ নদীর তীরে হওয়ায় এই অঞ্চল ছিল বসতি ও ব্যবসার জন্য আদর্শ স্থান।
প্রায় সময়ই সুচিত্রা সেনের সাথে বিরুলিয়ার স্মৃতি জড়ানো হয়। এর একটা কারন আছে বৈকি।
বিরুলিয়া ছিল মূলত বস্ত্র ব্যবসায়ীদের আড্ডা। এই অঞ্চল থেকে ময়মনসিংহ, ঢাকা, টাংগাইলসহ আরো বিভিন্ন জায়গায় তুরাগ নদী সহযোগে যাওয়া যেত, আর তাই বিরুলিয়া ছিল তাদের মূল আকর্ষণ।। এখানেই ছিল ঢাকেশ্বরী বস্ত্রালয়ের প্রথম দোকান। এখান থেকে বলিউডের বড় বড় নায়িকাদের শাড়ি বানিয়ে নেয়া হত। সুচিত্রা সেনও সেই তালিকায় আছেন। আরো অনেক বিখ্যাত নারীরা এখান থেকে নেয়া শাড়ি পড়তেন।
২০০ বছর পুরনো বটগাছ
রজনীকান্ত ঘোষের বাড়ি থেকে হেটে গেলেই নদী। আর তারই ঘাটের পাশে রয়েছে কয়েক একর জুড়ে অবিস্থিত একটা প্রকান্ড বটগাছ। ঢাকেশ্বরী বস্ত্রালয় যখন বিরুলিয়া থেকে কোলকাতায় স্থানান্তর করা হয় তখন তার কর্নধার নিতাইলাল সাহা এই বটগাছের একটু ছবির তৈলচিত্র আকিঁয়ে সঙ্গে নিয়ে যান। এখনো কোলকাতার 'আদি ঢাকেশ্বরী বস্থালয়ে' এর অফিসে সেই ছবিটি শোভা পাচ্ছে।
কীভাবে যাবেন?
এই গরমে মেট্রো হতে পারে বিরুলিয়া যাওয়ার সহজ উপায়। মেট্রোতে উঠে সোজা চলে যাবেন উত্তরা সেন্ট্রাল স্টেশনে। স্টেশনের নিচেই অনেক রিকশা পাওয়া যায়। রিকশা নিয়ে চলে যান বিরুলিয়া ব্রিজ। অপর পাড়ে নেমে সামান্য হেটে গেলেই বামে একটু রাস্তা নেমে গেছে। সে পথে হাটলেই পেয়ে যাবেন শতবর্ষী পুরনো এই নগরী।

Birulia Zamindar Bari
Birulia, Savar, Dhaka
Birulia is a small village in Savar, located beside the Turag River. This quiet place still carries the memory of the old zamindari era and the British period.
At the very end of the village stands the historic zamindar house known as Rajanikanta Ghosh’s residence. It is said that the original zamindar of this area was Nalini Mohon Saha and the region was part of the Bhawal Estate. When the zamindari system began to fade almost a hundred years ago, Rajanikanta Ghosh bought the property from Nalini Saha. His family still lives here. The estate once had around twenty five houses and today only ten or eleven remain.
The zamindar house is not the only historic part of the area. Old ruins scattered around the village show signs of ancient settlements. Since it is located on the riverbank, Birulia was once a perfect location for trade and daily life.
Birulia is often linked with the memories of the legendary actress Suchitra Sen. There is a reason for that. The village used to be a gathering place for cloth merchants. Boats from here travelled to Mymensingh, Dhaka, Tangail and many other places using the Turag River. The very first shop of Dakeshwari Bastralaya started here. Sarees for many famous actresses, including Suchitra Sen, were made in this village. Many other well known women of that time also wore sarees crafted here.
The two hundred year old banyan tree
If you walk a little from Rajanikanta Ghosh’s house toward the river you will find a huge banyan tree spread across several acres. When Dakeshwari Bastralaya moved from Birulia to Kolkata, its owner Nitalal Saha painted an oil portrait of this banyan tree and took it with him. That painting still hangs in the office of Adi Dakeshwari Bastralaya in Kolkata.
How to go
The metro can be the easiest way to reach Birulia during hot weather.
Take the metro to Uttara Central Station. Rickshaws are available right under the station. Take a rickshaw to Birulia Bridge. After crossing the bridge, walk a little and you will notice a small road on the left. Follow that path and you will reach this century old riverside village.
